11 phrases I’ve stopped using at work

Are your words reflecting your confidence and clarity?

Sometimes, a simple shift in how we phrase things can make all the difference in how we are perceived.

Here are 11 easy swaps to level up your communication, whether you’re leading a project, collaborating with a team, or reaching out for support.

1️⃣ "Does that make sense?" ➡️ "What questions can I answer for you?"

2️⃣ "I could be wrong, but..." ➡️ "What are your thoughts on this?"

3️⃣ "Sorry, I'll fix that right now." ➡️ "Thank you for catching this/thanks for the feedback!"

4️⃣ "What do you want me to do?" ➡️ "I recommend we do [X] because [Y]. What are your thoughts?"

5️⃣ "It was no big deal" ➡️ "Thank you! I really appreciate that."

6️⃣ "Sorry to bother you" ➡️ "When you have a minute, can I get your opinion on [X]?”

7️⃣ “Just” (I’m just…) ➡️ Nothing. It’s a filler word.

8️⃣ "Does that make sense?" ➡️ "What do you think about this approach?"
Encourages collaboration and invites input rather than seeking validation.

9️⃣ "I'm no expert, but..." ➡️ "Based on my experience, here's what I suggest."
Owns your expertise while remaining open to discussion.

🔟 "I think we should..." ➡️ "I recommend we [X] because [Y]."
Adds confidence and context to your suggestions, making them actionable and clear.

1️⃣1️⃣ "I hope this helps." ➡️ "Let me know if there's anything else I can provide to support you."
Keeps the conversation open and shows a willingness to assist further.
